READ SINGAPORE 读吧!新加坡

National Library Board has been spending big money on read Singapore campaign. It was officially started on 21 May and will end on 31 Aug 2008. There were free books, CDs, brochures, post cards created for the event (see photos). There were sponsors sharing the cost.

The objective for read Singapore I believe is to encourage Singaporean to read more. I have some concern:

1 What is the total cost for the campaign
2 What is the results of the campaign

In my opinion, beside reading, NLB should consider “ write Singapore” campaign because just reading is not enough. One should write or record down feelings /comments and be prepared to share with others.

It is my belief that the govt is quite cash rich having increased the percentage of GST collection not too long ago, and is now in a hurry to spend the surplus. There is frenzy in upgrading of wet markets and food centres. The Adam Road food centre was renovated not too long ago but recently I went to the place and found it being renovated again. So spending money on Read Singapore Campaign is not a big deal. The main objective of the campaign is to encourage more readers, noting that many adults have left school for years, rekindling their interest in reading is important, so as to have a literate population. Rekindling people interest in writing is not that easy, therefore giving priortiy to the raading campaign should come first.

Dear Zen,
Thanks for the comments.
What I wanted is that government must measure the results of such activities. make sure the money is well spent.
