EIGHT GOLD 八金 EMAS LAPAN


Singapore is trying so hard to win a medal at the Olympic game, we have invested huge money. Finally we won a silver medal.

On the other hand, I read the news from Today newspaper captioned “ He's the King of the Kings "( see newspaper cutting). Mr Michael Phelps from US had won eight gold medals!

One thing I wanted to know is what is his winning formula?

There are many prevailing factors why America has so many talents, not only from the sporting arena, but across the broad. Here are the main ones.

1 It has a huge population of over 200 million people, therefore easier to pick the excellent candidates.

2 Like Singapore, the country welcome talents all over the world. The difference lies in the vast scale in the recruitment.

3 Because the US is a big country with many opportunities, more talents (all over the world, particulary from Europe) are attracted to migrate there.

4 Large input of funds both from govt and private sector enable the country to have good training and coaching facilities whereby producing many local and foreign sporting talents.

5 There are great financial perks and career opportunities, especially from the commercial sector, to stimulate sporting talents to do well.

The above are the main reasons, not mentioning the minor ones. As to why the US can produce many outstanding athletes, it is interesting to note that China is following exactly the footstep of the US, by rewarding large amount of monetary perks, including commercial endorsements, to its outstanding althletes. The only different is that it needs not import foreign talents, because there is already many local sport men ever hungry for success.

Oh, I forgot to mention current swimming sensation Michael Phelps. Like his predecessor Spikes, who won 7 gold medals in a previous olympics, are rare gems, only to be discovered once in a blue moon, even by American standard. Anyway, they are the similar products churned out by the mighty American sporting machine, in the ways as I have mentioned in my previous comment

It was unbelievable that the person can win so many gold awards.
I am interested to know how he trains, eats and rests etc.

In the U.S. with a population of 305 million, and a history of 232 years since independence, and more importantly, the pursuit of happiness enshrined in their Declaration of Independence as a basic individual rights ("We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."), it is not surprising that such excellence has been achieved by one talented young man. Records will be broken, sooner or later.

What is more amazing is how a small, young nation of Jamaica can produce 2 gold medallists and 3 silver medallists out of a population of just 2.7 million. Jamaica gained political independence in the year 1962, just a few years before Singapore. It is a small island nation, although bigger in area than Singapore, with a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as the Head of State. It has a per capita GDP of $3700, less than one-tenth that of Singapore's.

The human potential is limitless. We can achieve whatever we set out to do, if we have self-belief and the self-motivation to prepare, plan and do whatever is necessary, to develop our fullest potential.
