HEALTH FOOD 健康食品 Makanan Kesihaten

I got a friend who was strongly believe in health food supplement. He encouraged me to try. He told me they are very good.

As at to date, I have not tried any health food. In my opinion, the best food was fresh from the plants without going through processing.

According to experts, there were four ways to have a healthy body:
  • exercise regularly
  • eat wisely
  • manage stress
  • do not smoke

The challenge now is the implement of all these ideas.

Not only I agree to your four ways of having a healthy, I think most doctors do. Then why is that supplements can sell so well, there are many reasons? The main reason is that because of commercial consideration, most plants are cultivated by using fertilizers which are actually processed chemical compounds from factories - hence not natural. In short, most food we eat are not organic. Furthermore, due to rapid commercialisation of food production, soil condition is usually depleted in many essential plant nutients - hence less beneficial to human consumption. Because of lesser nutrients, many people think that additional supplements are necessary to boost up good health. Most people know that exercise and a less stressful life help to enhance good health, but unfortunately due to fast pace of working life, people give excuses of having less energy for exercise but instead deliberately choose smoking to lessen their stress - how wrong can they be. Personally, I think there is no harm taking supplements which I think am lacked of, but they must be certified ones, not those of unknown or doubtful origins.

This particular one may just consist of multi-vitamins, hence, "vitality" in its name.

In short, if they sell for higher price than the vitamin pills you find in pharmacy stores, they could be basically over-priced vitamin pills.

Why are many of these labelled as health supplements whilst claiming to be so beneficial to our health?

This is because health food supplements are less regulated than drugs. They do not have to show years of clinical trials and lab tests to prove their claims of efficacy and beneficial effects without any negative side effects after long term consumption.

Even doctors have different opinions when coming to supplements. One doctor told me that it is not necessary to take vitamins when food have all the nutrients while another advised me to take just a multi-vit. On one
occasion, I heard a customer asking a TCM shop owner which herb to take because he had high blood pressure. The shop owner told him to see a western doctor immediately because hbp is a serious ailment and needs medical attention promptly, not something to be taken lightly. Hence we can conclude that whether it is food, supplements or drugs, each of them has its own merits and side effects.
