HEALTH TALK

I attended a health talk on 25 Sep 2008. The speaker was from Taiwan. He talked about depression. A one- page note was given to all participants.

According to the speaker, depression was one of the biggest problem with Singaporean. It was due to work stress and our modern life style. He explained three ways to overcome the disease:
  • changing the environment by going for tour
  • eat more fish
  • have regular exercise

Before he ended his talk, he demonstrated a foot simulator invented by Taiwan hospital. According to the speaker, the product will be launch in 20 Dec 2009. Nevertheless, he let everyone tried on the product. We were impressed by the product. The speaker said, as a good will, he will allow only eight person to order the equipment.

I think it was a wonderful way of promoting the product.

With the current crisis of poison milk products from China, one should be extra careful when buying health promotion items. Of course in term of health promoting equipment, it is definitely not so dangerous as health products meant for human consumption, still extra caution is necessary. As a lay man, it is my general view, not necessary relating to this particular product, that a person promoting health products should be a certified specialist in his field - for example it should be a qualified nutritionist to testify on food, not just some assuring words from any dick, tom or harry. Secondly, one must question the source of the products - are they from authorised sources which have genuine credentials that can be proven? not those fly-by-night types. Currently, the world are saturated with fake practitioners (even their university degrees are fakes) going for a fast buck. It is better for everyone to be on the safe side rather to be sorry later. However, I am not saying that not all people are evil, but it only takes one spoilt egg to destroy the whole basket of them.

Dear Zen,
Thanks for your comments. The speaker was quite sincere. He said they are not profit making. So, I hope he is not the spoilt egg.

Peh - We are already old hands on sales talks. All sales people look sincere (companies do not hire crooked looking sale personnel). By now we should know how capable trained personnel are when coming to convince people into buying, if not they would not be hired in the first place. I am not against buying things from sales people, but what I am trying to stress is that buyers should be
able to assess the validity of the things they are going to purchase, not by just being impressed by the sales person or the goods they sell. I am sure you have ever come across the English saying: 'don't judge a book by its cover' - that is the very core principle of buying thing - to be able to judge the value of a thing through looking at it from various angles and also whether the item meets your personal requirement. Many people buy things on impulse and the bought items ended up in a store room waiting for disposal later on.
