REBUILD NANTAH 重建南大

Nanyang University (Nantah) was merged with Singapore University to become National University of Singapore (NUS) on 1980. Subsequently the government set up Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The old Nantah was no longer exist.

There was a idea mooted by some ex-Nanyang University Graduates to rebuild Nantah. The issue will be discussed on the 10 Ex-Graduates Gathering scheduled from 16 to 18 Oct 2008 at Beijing.

More than one thousand ex-Nantah graduates will be attending the gathering. . The issue will be discussed. A detailed paper was prepared see link : (http://beijing2008.nantahchoir.com/fuban.html )

It was a big idea required mega- resources. However, it was a meaningful and tough idea to implement.

I have a very simple perception on Nantah and its graduates. It is a great university very unique in this part of the world. Do the merger with the present NTU make the university disappear from Singapore history? - my answer is no. Why? do the great wall of China loses it importance after being restored with new materials? Definitely not, in fact gains more prominence today than its past history. The old NU building is still there, but only wears a new dress. The spirit of NU is still breathing among its graduates. The only thing to revive is the confidence of its graduates towards their alma mater, other obstacles are merely small ones in comparison.

Dear Zen,
Thanks for the comments.
It was a "big idea" not easy to implement.

Peh - You are right. Building up a tradition of a learning institution takes time and effort for all who have connection with it. Take for example the the Raffles institution at Bras Basah Road. It takes over a hundred years to build up its reputation as a leading place of learning. The Raffles of today at Bishan is a totally new school. Has it lost its reputation and tradition? No, despite of changes, the institution remains an excellant place of learning in Singapore history through the generations of dedicated teachers, principals and hardworking students who keep the school flag flying high. So Nantah graduates must also possess this kind of fighting spirit to keep their alma mater, now NTU, going forward through the passage of time, without harping on the difference between NU and NTU. The two identities are in one body. I am proud of my eldest daughter, a graduate of NTU and also NU.

Maybe you can recreate a similar university, but the old physical structure will never be the same. So no matter how, old students would like to go back and see scenes like those I have recorded here
