When I was at Beijing attending the reunion, I took the MRT to see how was the service. It cost me two dollars RMB, about 50 cents (Singapore dollar) to travel for five stations.
Their MRT was as good as Singapore MRT or even better than us in the areas of visual control.
The passengers do not worry to travel the wrong direction as there were visual controls put in place to guide them. (See pictures)

Our MRT is also not to be under-rated, as there are many foreigners praising it. For example, they are impressed with its safety features and the most noticeable one is the doors of under-ground stations which automatically open and close, separating the train from the station, thus ensuring the safety of the passengers. However there are no need for the above-ground stations to have such safety feature. Furthermore, our stations not only have visual signs (in English) displaying prominently at appropriate places,in certain place like chinatown it includes written signs in chinese. Our overall public addressing system, route plans (both inside the train and stations), time arrival electronic sign boards, many other safety features are not only first class but are user friendly to locals as well as foreign visitors. The best part is our integrated public system involving bus terminal, taxi stands covered linkways all inter connected and can easily rank one of the best in the world. In fact when I compare our MRT system to the Tokyo subways, we are ahead in a number of ways. I strongly believe that after the whole MRT system is finally set up island-wide, it could be likened to changi airport, one of the best in the world. Singapore is really practising the kaizan way of doing things - no 'wayanging'.
