JAPANESE PIGGY BANK

I read today's Zao Bao that the Japanese had a new toy. It was a electronic piggy bank (see newspaper cutting). The toy had sold more than 250,000 units.

The rule of the game was you must deposit 500 Japanese yuan (about S$8.4) everyday until you achieve 100,000 yuan ( about S$1,676 ). You will have good fortune after that.

Piggy bank was nothing new but the Japanese came up with this innovative idea to help people to cultivate good saving habit.

The article did not mention how much it cost. In my opinion, it was a meaningful toy worth investing.

Why this toy is such agreat success, particularly in Japan. My reasons are: no1 - The Japanese, like many in a confucian society, treat saving as a great virtue. no.2 - Saving S$8.40 a day is within the reach of many Japanese. no.3 - It is nice feeling to achieve your attainable goal. no.4 - The Japanese love hi-devices. no5 - Though the Japanese are technologically advance, they are in actual fact still quite traditional in thought. Having good luck is still uppermost in their mind hence their eagerness to purchase the good-luck-charm piggy bank. no.6 - To launch this product during the current financial turmoil is indeed good timing as more people are likely to save. I would not be surprised if this simple product is well received world wide. This reflects the ingenuity of the Japanese.
