50 YEARS OF SINGAPORE CHINESE PERIODICALS

In the 50s, there were so many Chinese Periodicals. National Library Board has compiled a 325 pages of book on this ( see picture).

Most of this periodicals were not profit making. What they wanted is to publish something in line with the Chinese language, values and culture. Non of them survive today.

I come to conclusion that for a Enterprise to survive, you need to have your core values. The most important thing is, the enterprise must make money.

In the 21st century today, in Singapore context, core values are mostly expounded in govt publications. In order to make profit, most magazines sold to the public today are of the paparazi (pa kua in chinese) type, in other words of the gossiping kind. Time has changed, the younger generation has different outlook in life, a great difference from yester years. Can we blame the publishers ? They have to produce what the public wants otherwise they would go bust.
