ELECTRONIC ROAD PRICING (ERP) 公路电子收费

My friend sent me three pictures regarding ERP. According to the pictures, by year 2015, Singapore will become a ERP nation! It was quite scary. I used the photos to share with my readers. I have no intention to infringe the copy rights of the photos originator.

My concern is is it a good idea to keep setting up ERP gantries? Is it the only way to solve the road congestion problems?

I believe they are other solutions such as speeding up the improvement of public transport service, provide incentive for early travellers, stagger working hours , relocate government offices outside centre business area etc. Therefore when we faced with problem, think about more solutions.

When you hit people in their pockets, of course ERP becomes very effective. We have been in the govt most of our working life and certainly understand the rationale of govt officials when coming to implementing schemes. Sad to say the thinking in the uppermost of these officials' minds is to make money, the more the merrier, and would appear in the good book of the govt at the same time. This strategy not only works, it also enable these officials to climb their corporate ladders smoothly, and make them looked very effective. In short, they are actually killing two birds with a stone. So ERP comes in conveniently for these officials to turn it into a platform for personal 'progress'.
