READING CLUB 读书会

The Singapore reading clubs were originated from Taiwan. However, the clubs at Taiwan were managed professionally. They were also self- sustaining.

I was involved in the reading club since 2003. I went to Taiwan two times to study how the Taiwanese run the clubs (See Photo). I have submitted a report to the Singapore Reading Club Association.

Our Singapore reading clubs were getting the momentum, they were 42 clubs in Singapore. The Taxi Sifu Reading Club was formed in July 2005. They were featured in ST on 3 April 2008 (See picture). The club was supported by National Library Board.

To me reading a book is considered improvement. The next step is to implement what they have read into practice.

Well done our Taxi Sifu!

Reading is not only a good habit for people of all ages, it is also part of the education process. All developed countries have a literate population. In this respect reading clubs have a useful role to play and establishing a link to the fraternity in Taiwan is really a promotion of culture between both countries. All these happen in the Chinese Language world and I do not know whether there are such similar English reading clubs in Singapore.
