In today’s Chinese newspaper Zao Bao (17 May 08) reported that A monk called Xie Miao Yi was earning $660,000 a year (see above newspaper cutting).
When the reporter asked about his income and driving brand new Mercedes car, Xie said he was doing some small business. Xie is currently facing some legal suit by his business partners on some temples projects.
Below was the summary of Xie annual income:
· 1999- S600,000
· 2001- $660,000
· 2003 - $60,000
·( Those years not indicated were more than $100,000.)
Putting the legal suit aside, based on face value i.e his income and car used, I would said 行行出状元 . Which meant the monk was the “master of the trade”.

When My father passed away in 2001 a funeral rite was conducted by a buddhist monk who drove a Mercedes and it clearly showed he was a rich monk. For conducting religious rites, the charging fees are rather high. That is why incomesor monks in Singapore are good. In the religious world there are two types of monks, one type is genuine and practises austerity, the other kind is simply commercial motivated. Now you know why the govt is currently looking into the accounts a certain buddhist charity organisation to verify whether it is properly managed.

In today straits times (20 May 2008), the paper reported the story of this monk. The Zao Bao write up was more comprehensive.
